English for skateboarders founder

Hi ! My name is Chris and I’m the proud founder of this language platform dedicated to English for Skaters.

I am a qualified language teacher and I started skateboarding in 1989, after having my head blown off by Powell’s “Ban This” video. When it was screwed back on, it was blown off again by Hokus Pokus and By Streets on Fire…

My reason for creating this learning platform comes from my experience as a musician, a skater and a teacher.

For 5 years, I had a business teaching French but despite the heart and passion I put into it, the students didn’t have the same heart. They rarely did any studying and just “showed up”. It made me sad.

Skaters may not know it, but they have many qualities that a teacher dreams to find in a student:  commitment, focus, creativity, energy…

These are the qualities I wish to work with,  and to make it possible I needed to re-connect with my People.

Our ESOL English programme is made for learners of English as a Second Language. (Non-native speakers) If you are learning English in school, this is for you! This website contains videos and quizzes that cover the main aspects of the English language just as you will find in any “real” school.

We cover Tenses, Pronunciation and Grammar. The course is designed for skateboarders. We use references to the skateboard culture such as pictures, famous brands, tricks…

We do this for several reasons: Firstly, it’s more fun. And we know that learning is easier when the mind is open and receptive. Second, we are building on a knowledge that already exists. Skateboarding contains a vocabulary that is in English. We can expand, and build on it.

Third, skateboarders are passionate people who are proud of their culture. Why not “recycle” this positive energy for a second purpose?
